Open Road Music
Sometimes my non-riding friends ask, “why do you do it?”
Unless you’re a biker it is hard to understand why we ride. There is great solace in a long ride through the countryside. Early mornings in the cool air clears your head and makes everything seem right. The open road is a great place to work out the frustrations that build up coping with the every day grind. The best part about work it the ride getting there.
Joe Janiak, the guy performing this song, really nails it.
Only other bikers, and their dogs understand the joy we get riding in the wind. Why hell, we can ever tell where we are by the taste of the bugs.

do you have any more info on the band that made the song “open road.” My dad loves it and really wants a shirt, like the one he’s wearing in the video, but I have not been able to find the site of the band or any info other than the video on youtube. any info you might have would be great.
I’m not sure, but I think Joey J and the Shovelheads are a garage band. The guy is talented and I’m sure we’ll hear more from him in the future. If anyone else knows anything about them I hope they will post it.
Hi,
This song is AWESOME! The best song I have ever heard about biking!
The lyrics are exactly why we ride and get very grumpy when we can not ! (at least I do)
Is there any way to get this song on CD. I would happily pay Joe and the shovelhead for it and play it while ride my ultra classic all the time!

several people asked me tonight where they can find this video. we have a large biker rally in our state and lots of people are interested in finding this group to maybe play at our rally next year. the message is right one and the band very talented. we have even started using the video in our presentations for a rider education class.
English isn´t my mother language, therefore I do not understand part of the lyrics.
Can anybody help me by posting the lyrics?
Thanks.
Mario, as best I can tell these are the lyrics.
Its a freedom lifestyle I adore
She’s waiting for me behind my garage door
She’s all dressed up and ready to roll
Never saw a thing always begging for more.
If you don’t ride then you don’t know
Where I’ve been and where I’m going
Its all about the freedom of the open road
Open the throttle and roll
Everybody rides by the season
They ride different bikes for different reasons
Once you get on it it is hard to get off
If you lay her down I hope you lay her down soft
If you don’t ride then you don’t know
Where I’ve been and where I’m going
We see more through our sunglass lens
Than you ever see from you Mercedes Benz
Thurn the throttle and roll
You don’t ride you don’t know
Its in our blood, its in our soul
Its all about the healing you get from the open road
Along the way strangers become friends
This brotherhood of ours never ends
Whether its a thing like a poker run
Sacrifice you time for the fallen one
If you don’t ride you don’t know
Where I’ve been and where I’m going
Its all about the freedom of the open road
It doesn’t matter if your young or old
Running with the pack or on your own
Its all about the freedom of the open road
Open the throttle and roll
THANKS A LOT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Hi there i was wondering if Joey has an email where i can reach him or another website thankyou Canadian Lady
Hi there i havent yet recieved a reply .but was wondering if the long sleeve t shirts were available in Mens Large Black .My Husband and myself Ride Harley Davidsons we love the Open Road and have fun and do alot of charities for the children .Here in Nova Scotia we have 6 ” of snow down .and Joeys song makes us feel good about the upcoming spring .we also have lost a family of 4 on 2 motorcycles here and the song makes it a nice tribute ..God bless Joey J and his group .
Hi Nova Scotia Biker Chick, I don’t know Joey personally, but like you his music touched something deep inside us all.
I don’t know anything about the articles he is selling. I do know that there is a link in one of the responses to this thread that sends you to his store on ebay. I think he is not only selling his music video there, but also the t-shirts you are asking about. Read the threads and I am sure you will find it.
While I’m at it I wanted to send you my sympathy. I know how it is to have your bike in the garage for months on end. My northern cousins complain about PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrom) a lot. This is something we don’t have down here in Florida. We have good riding weather year round. And honestly, winters are the best for us. It rarely goes below 40 and we relish riding in our “cold” weather.
I’m sorry about your loss. As you can see from the rest of my blog I am always bitching about cagers not paying attention. I get really sick of hearing, “I didn’t see them coming” or “I didn’t hear them”. That is bullshit. If people would pay more attention to their driving and less to their cell phones and toys then the death toll would be lower.
Hi there im wondering if anyone would be so gracious in sending me the mpg music for my player open road ? thankyou
Hey DaFrog,
Thanks for the lyrics you where dam close.
Here are the full lyrics to open road.

Sorry… meant to change the last line of the first verse to
“never talks back always begging for more..
hope this helps …
just saw the video open road… it is fantastic… when the shirts come out…i defininatly want one… or 2… i will check back soon… thanks… kirk
I always looking for a song like this!!!
Among my family members, only me and my uncle lives on the two wheel’s world, he had a Dyna Glide, while i only had a Honda 2000, but darn this song really touches us both!
And like what Joey said, “if you don’t ride then you don’t know”, the rest of my family complains about how i always ride a bike wherever i go, they think that riding is dangerous, but they don’t know the reason of why we ride, or the joy we feel, so i guess i can accept their opinions, hahaha…
I already had some friends lost in a motorcycle accident, which one of them is my lover, Yvonne, but as she once said, we’ll ride until the time we died, and Joey’s song makes a good tribute, God bless you Joey and the Shovelheads!
trying to explain to a non rider what it’s like is pretty much the same as explaining to a virgin what an orgasm feels like…it just doesn’t work…
This song really puts a rider feelings in musical poetry, just awesome.
I found this vid on a friend’s page and fell head over heels…its the finest description of the addiction I have ever heard. So I had to send it to all my riding friends. Each and everyone of us LOVED both the song and the vid…I have to thank the boys for putting that out there for us two wheel tramps. Now I need the cd and about 4 dozen t’s….cant find the store on EBAY but I will keep trying.
If anyone knows something concrete about where to find the items, please please PLEASE let me know!!!
Thanks JJ & the Shovelheads…thanks for putting into words what I have felt and couldnt explain.

We are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to find this song on CD… the shirts will be a bonus! Can’t wait to hear what else Joey has to sing. Thanks Joey for telling the world how we feel.
Joey, Thanks for the shirt and bandana. It is good stuff and great quality. I can wear the bandana now, but I’ll let it warm up a little before I go out in the shirt. It even gets cold down here in the swamp now and then.
Everyone is looking forward to your upcoming events and website.
DaFrog-
I see you got a t-shirt…. where can we get them??? We are still looking for the new website, any idea when that will be up?
Thanks,
Cowboy and Lacey
Hi Cowboy, actually I’ve been exchanging emails with Joey. He sent me the t-shirt and some bandannas. I see that his store is no longer open on ebay, but he said he will be launching his website soon. I’m sure you can order what ever you like from there once it is up and running. I will post a link as soon as he tells me what it is.
Any word on the Joey J. website yet?? Great song and great video, looking forward to hearing some more.
